Common symptoms of food allergy are:
- Feeling lightheaded, dizzy and difficulty in breathing.
- Feeling heavy headed, itchy & watering eyes
- Tingling or Itchy mouth or ear canal, shortness of breath
- Wheezing, tummy pain and swelling nasal congestion or trouble breathing after you had your meal

Causes of Food allergy:
They are caused by various organic chemicals occurring naturally in a wide variety of foods, animal and vegetable, more often than to food additives, preservatives, colourings and flavourings, such as sulphites or dyes. Both natural and artificial ingredients may cause adverse reactions in sensitive people if consumed in sufficient amounts, the degree of sensitivity varying between individuals.
Our health care team can provide you home tests for allergy of 44 foods.
Inhalant Allergy
Inhalants Profile is a blood test that measures IgE antibodies for common indoor and outdoor inhalants (for 44 allergens). An Inhalant test can help you identify whether an allergen is triggering some common symptoms associated with:
- Sneezing
- Runny nose
- Itchy eyes, ears, lips, throat and palate, conjunctivitis
- Severe wheezing
- Coughing, wheezing, asthma
- Shortness of breath
- Sinus problems
- A sore palate
- Mouth ulcers
- Nettle-like rash
- Swelling
- Vomiting, & diarrhoea
- Skin rash or hives
When an allergic person comes across allergens, their immune system believes that the allergen will cause damage to body and produces a special type of antibody (IgE) to attack the invading material. This stimulates other fighting blood cells to release further chemicals such as histamine which together cause the symptoms of an allergic reaction.
Few of the allergens that might cause issues in your immune system are
- Pollen from trees and grasses
- House dust mites
- Molds, Aspergillus
- Pets such as cats and dogs
- Insects like wasps, cockroach and bees
- Industrial and household chemicals
- Medicines
- Foods such as eggs, milk, gluten, Wheat Pollen and nuts
- Latex
- Bermuda Grass, Orchard Grass etc.

Symptoms of Food Intolerance
Food intolerance is more chronic, less acute, less obvious in its presentation, and often more difficult to diagnose than a food allergy. The symptoms of food intolerance are similar to that of food allergies, and often leave one mistaken for the other. However, a few symptoms of intolerance to certain foods include:
- Feeling Unwell
- Stomach Ache
- Bloating / Swelling
- Migraines & Headaches
- Cough / Running Nose
- Irritable Bowels
- Hives
Food intolerance has been found associated with
- irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease
- chronic constipation
- chronic hepatitis C infection
- eczema
- NSAID intolerance
- respiratory complaints including asthma,
- rhinitis and headache
- functional dyspepsia
- eosinophilic esophagitis
- ear, nose and throat (ENT) illnesses
What to do if I have food intolerance:
Symptoms improve by controlling foods that cause mild intolerance to stopping all together (in case of severe intolerance) then by introducing these foods slowly as part of the diet after a few months.
Food intolerance is more chronic, less acute, less obvious in its presentation, and often more difficult to diagnose than a food allergy.

Food Intolerance is often confused with Food Allergies. While food intolerance symptoms are often similar to food allergy symptoms, the underlying cause is not the same at all. During an allergy or in this case of food allergy – the body releases histamine which can affect different part of the body and can cause life threating reaction like Anaphylaxis which is a severe, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction.
Food Intolerance responses on the other hand are normally mild and do not involve the immune system and are not life threatening and intolerance to food can build up over time. Symptoms include irritability, Fatigue, Gas and Bloating with headaches and water retention. Some people also develop eczema.
Our experienced DHA registered home nurse will come to your place and take the blood sample with all necessary precautions.
